Italians win Star Eastern Hemispheres

Published on May 5th, 2018

Trieste, Italy (May 5, 2018) – Italians Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi won the Star Class Eastern Hemisphere Championship in the 5-race series ahead of world champions Augie Diaz/ Bruno Prada (USA/BRA) and Thomas Allart/ Killian Weise (NED).

After only three races from the first three days of the event, two races were held today in very shifty winds, with the fifth and final race enabling teams to discard their worst score. The winners of today’s two races were Marin Misura/ Tonko Barac (Croatia) and Christian Nehammer/ Florian Urban (Austria), seventh and eighth respectively in the overall ranking.

This is the second impressive victory for Negri/ Lambertenghi after their success in the Bacardi Cup in Miami two months ago – the first ever Italian win of the USA event.

“I am very happy for the result; luckily we managed to sail the right number of races (minimum of four) to make this championship valid. The organization and the Yacht Club Adriaco deserved it,” declared Negri. “Weather conditions in these days were extremely changeable and made the championship very tactical. We followed a rather conservative strategy and in the end, with a great patience, we managed to clinch this victory.”

Negri/ Lambertenghi received the congratulations from world champions Diaz/ Prada after they finished five points off the lead. “They deserved the victory with a consistent series of results,” said Diaz of the Italian’s all top five scores. “Personally, I am very satisfied with my second place. Every time you compete in an international championship, such as the Star Eastern Hemisphere Championship 2018, and you manage to step on the podium, it’s a success.”

Racing was held on May 2 to 5.
