Penultimate day at NYYC Race Week

Published on September 25th, 2020

Newport, RI (September 25, 2020) – The third day of New York Yacht Club’s Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex featured a building breeze and a distance race for the ORC fleets and three more buoy races for the Melges IC37 Class.

When the spray settled following great racing conditions, the top three in the ORC classes remain unchanged but just one point separates first from second in ORC 1 and two points separate the top top boats in ORC 2. However, in the Melges IC37 fleet, order saw a significant shuffle.

Day two darling Waka Jawaka led by Michael Goldfarb and Laura Grondin stumbled hard with a 8-8-6, dropping them off the lead to fourth while Christopher Culver’ Blazer II posted a near perfect 1-1-3 to now top the rankings by nearly 9 points over Pacific Yankee with Drew Freides and Bill Ruh.

With one day of racing left for all classes tomorrow, the initial warning signal for the final race of the first class will not be made after 1500hrs. The warning signal for a start following one or more general recalls or for subsequent classes may be made after 1500.

The biennial regatta takes place September 23-26 on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.

The New York Yacht Club’s Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex was first run in 1998, with the biennial regatta, traditionally run at the apex of the summer sailing season, having established itself as one of the premier summer race weeks in the Northeast thanks to its attractive combination of great racing conditions off Newport and the superlative shoreside hospitality at the Club’s waterfront Clubhouse overlooking Newport Harbor.
