Wayfarer Canadian Nationals

Published on July 24th, 2013

In a final competitive tune-up before the Wayfarer Internationals XV at Mississauga, Ontario on August 3, 22 boats met at the Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club on Lake Ontario for the Wayfarer Canadian Nationals on July 20-21. First place in the seven-race series was a tie between Simon Strauss of New York with crew Joe Blackmore of Michigan, and Peter Rahn with crew Alex Rahn of Montreal. No formula for breaking ties in scoring is utilized by the class. Third place went to Sue Pilling with crew Steph Romaniuk of Perry Sound, Ontario.

The top three finishers jumped ahead after the first day of racing, coming to shore tied with 12 points each. But competition was keen throughout the fleet, with the fourth place through ninth place boats closely contended after those first four races.

The second day of racing featured winds of 12-15 knots, along with the challenging Humber Bay chop. The teams of Strause/Blackmore and the Rahns traded the top spots back and forth to run away with first place.

The Wayfarer Internationals XV is being hosted by Mississauga Sailing Club with assistance from Port Credit Yacht Club. A contingent of 35 boats from England, Ireland, Denmark, U.S. and Canada is expected to compete in the week-long regatta.
