Wood is good at Vintage Gold Cup

The 2023 Vintage Gold Cup has attracted 32 entrants for the 8-race series on September 28-30 in Richmond, MI. Held on Gull Lake, the 7th edition of this classic contest is for restored wooden Star boats, with competitors coming from Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Sweden, and across the USA.

Returning to defend last year’s title is Lars Grael (Brazil) who is teaming with crew Mauricio Bueno (Brazil). Also, three time champion of the Vintage Gold Cup, Paul Cayard (USA), will once again sail with son Danny Cayard (USA). Mark Reynolds (USA) is teaming again with his Gold Medal crew Hal Haenel (USA).

Swedes Leif Carlsson and Thomas Karlsson are returning to showcase their skills while also supporting the fleet. The Carlsson family has been building Star Boats in Sweden since the 1960s and have partnered with the Vintage Gold Cup in the restoration of six wooden star boats.

• Performance Vintage Boat: This category includes any wood Star boat that has been restored to race with modern equipment, which may include hiking straps and aluminum mast and boom.
