Details confirmed for 2025 Transpac Race

Published on May 22nd, 2024

The build-up begins for the 2025 edition of the Los Angeles to Honolulu Transpacific Yacht Race as the Notice of Race is now confirmed. Known as the Transpac and held biennially since 1906, this will be the 53rd edition for this 2,225 nm ocean race.

Following an analysis of past race data, host Transpacific Yacht Club will employ a rating system that incorporates weather forecasts for the 2025 race. Ratings will be calculated incorporating weather predictions available on the morning of each start and the polar performance data from each boat’s ORR certificate.

With three starts planned over five days, this handicap system that uses weather predictions for each start day will minimize the effect of differences in weather the fleet might experience, particularly off the coast of California.

“Instead of relying on historical averages, handicaps derived from weather predictions immediately before the start of the race represent one of the most significant improvements to scoring in many years,” said TPYC Commodore Bill Guilfoyle.

“With three starts over five days, no race stands to benefit more from this innovation than Transpac. Weather prediction-based handicaps will go a long way to leveling the playing field for boats affected by what are often vast differences in starting time weather conditions.”

“This is just one of the many improvements we’re making in 2025 to enhance the experience for new and returning teams competing in one of the greatest offshore races in the world.”

Starts will occur on July 1, July 3, and July 5 off of Point Fermin.
