Secret revealed about the magic Mai Tais

Published on July 23rd, 2025

The Transpac Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu is held biennially for good reason. As research indicates a tendency to remember positive experiences more vividly than negative ones, the gap year helps to forget about the wet and cold headsail reaching before hoisting the kite in the sunny trade winds.

There may be no more spectacular a finish line than off of Honolulu’s Diamond Head (see photos), but everyone earned it. The first couple days can be evil, so to further reward competitors, what happens after the finish is pretty special too.

“There’s nothing quite like the Aloha welcome that awaits you when the ‘follow me’ boat directs you to your slip,” explains Bill Guilfoyle, Commodore of Transpacific Yacht Club. “No matter what time of day or night, volunteers are there to meet you with leis and ice-cold Mai Tais as you are reunited with family and friends.”

And these aren’t just any Mai Tais as Hawaii Yacht Club reports:

The “secret” is hard work & dedication to providing the best! Most bars use a pre-made, bottled “Mai Tai Mix”, but not us. Our bartenders spared no effort in making our signature tropical juice blend with grilled fresh pineapples and other fresh fruits. They spent a couple of days grilling, squeezing, and blending fruits to provide you with a high-quality cocktail. The other cocktail ingredients are standard, Bacardi Superior (white rum) and Mount Gay Eclipse (dark rum).
