New chapter for a Paralympic legend

Sailing was removed from the Paralympic Games after Rio 2016, which was pretty much the last time I saw the SKUD 18 used for the doublehanded event. Referred to as a high-performance lead-assisted skiff, which seems contradictory, I’ve had a fondness for the design after spending a few hours in Nick Scandone’s boat prior to him winning gold at 2008 Games.
While intended for disabled racing, the layout was a dream for cruising through the harbor. Seating stations are fore and aft which electronically tilted to windward, with all controls within easy reach. I envisioned adding a beverage cooler, drink holders, and music system to “my boat.” Launch the asymmetrical kite and turn up the volume!
But now, where did they all go? Fiberglass boats don’t die easily, and there are apparently enough of them in New Zealand to organize a new event – The SKUD 18 International Match Race Challenge – that activates the Class and provides high-level racing for sailors with a disability. – Full report
