Crossing a big ocean in a small boat
Published on February 4th, 2026
In 2023, Andrew Bedwell planned to make a 1,900-mile trip from Newfoundland, Canada, to Falmouth, Cornwall in his 3.9-foot fiberglass yacht. He wanted to skipper the smallest boat ever to cross the Atlantic, but didn’t get too far before the vessel filled with water and then damaged while hauling out.
“The strops on the crane broke and Big C was dropped onto the concrete; it was smashed, causing irreparable damage,” he said.
“I was a bumbling mess, and everything came out: the grief about my father, who had died two days before I had set out. But then I decided that enough was enough; I had to redo it, create a version 2. That night, sitting down in a restaurant, probably not sure whether to use the serviette for tears or for drawing, I drew up a new boat, and 70% of that design is in the boat today.”
He plans to try again in May 2026. – Full report
