How to follow the #RolexSydneyHobart

Considered to be one of the most difficult yacht races in the world, the 628nm Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an annual event hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, starting in Sydney, New South Wales and finishing in Hobart, Tasmania.

When 89 yachts start the 2018 edition on Boxing Day (December 26) at 1pm AEDT, it will be prime time evening hours on Christmas Day for those of us in North America. And whether you are sunny down under or eggnogged up north, the broadcast program plan is determined to find you.

Australians can watch the broadcast from 12:30pm AEDT on Channel 7’s 7Mate channel, as well as 7Plus, across the country. 7Mate’s coverage will include commentary from CYCA Member and sailing expert Peter Shipway and injured America’s Cup-winning skipper Jimmy Spithill, with the broadcast hosted by Matt Carmichael.

The race start will also be live streamed to a vast international audience via the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race website. Tencent, Fox Asia and ABC International will also pick up the feed and broadcast to their markets.

In addition to a broadcast of the race start via 7Mate this year and the Rolex Sydney Hobart website, coverage throughout the race will arguably be more thorough than ever before.

Joining the seasoned race media team of Di Pearson and Nicole Browne this year are London Olympics silver medallist Olivia Price and highly experienced sports writer Rupert Guinness. Popular social media personality Nic Douglass, from ‘Adventures of a Sailor Girl’, will also feature in the team throughout the event.

Coverage of this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will include video boat tours, interviews, feature articles, news stories, regular race updates and a daily chat show from December 26 to 31 on the race Facebook page and website.

In addition to regular reports on the race website, sports fans will also be able to get their yachting fix on Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram channels.

Background: Eight-nine yachts will be chasing line honours and the overall Tattersall Cup win in the 628nm Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race which starts December 26, 2018. From Sydney Harbour, the fleet sails out into the Tasman Sea, down the south-east coast of mainland Australia, across Bass Strait (which divides the mainland from the island State of Tasmania), then down the east coast of Tasmania. At Tasman Island the fleet turns right into Storm Bay for the final sail up the Derwent River to the historic port city of Hobart.
