Get over yourselves. Get some boats out there on the Bay.

It’s been said that this is a city of “phenomenon fans” – meaning they show up only once something becomes a big deal. I’d say that’s fair. But we are great phenomenon fans. We might be guilty of jumping on the bandwagon, but once we do, we are likely to fill it to standing room only.

And that’s what could happen with the America’s Cup. Granted, the buildup has been meh. You can’t expect us to get all worked up about hull speed and hydrofoil configuration. But show us the New Zealand team ripping across the waves at 40 mph, and listen for the oohs and aahs. This town will turn out to see that.

But c’mon. You’ve got to give us something to work with here. Like, for example, a real boat race. Most of us don’t care if the Italians are mad at the Kiwis or the International Committee’s ruling on rudder specifications.

Get over yourselves. Get some boats out there on the bay. Otherwise, you are killing the buzz.

And just a warning, the 49ers will open training camp in July, with the first preseason game on Aug. 8 at Candlestick Park. And when that happens, you will need all the buzz you can muster. – Full story
