Skunked at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami

Published on January 29th, 2014

Miami, FL (January 29, 2014) – Sailors and their coaches at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami were confronted by light winds for the third consecutive day, with the trend leading to the first cancelled day of racing.

The ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami (Jan 25-Feb 1) is the third stop on the five event 2013-14 ISAF Sailing World Cup. The season has been to Qingdao, China (Oct 12-19) and Melbourne, Australia (Dec. 1-8) and will head to Palma, Spain (Mar. 29-Apr 5) before concluding in Hyeres, France (Apr. 19-26). The ISAF Sailing World Cup is open to the sailing classes (equipment) chosen for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competitions.

After a postponement ashore, the 10 Olympic and three Paralympic fleets launched at around 12:30 local time under cloudy skies and light breeze at 3 to 5 knots, with slight optimism that the wind would fill in this afternoon, similar to Monday and Tuesday. However, at approximately 14:00, all fleets abandoned any hope of racing and returned to shore for the day. All week, sailors have put a strong focus on boat positioning to harness what little breeze has been available on the course. Lighter crews have had the upper hand so far on Biscayne Bay.

The forecast for Wednesday night includes a large band of showers and squalls moving across South Florida. For Thursday, rain showers are predicted and some models showing breeze out of the North with 9 to 12 knots of pressure. Another model shows unstable breeze all day around 3 knots. Racing concludes Saturday.
