2017 USODA South Atlantic Champs in the Books

Published on September 24th, 2017

Arapahoe, NC (September 24, 2017) – The United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) South Atlantic Championship was held September 22-24,2017 at Camp Seagull. A beautiful location setting on the Neuse River in NC made the perfect venue for this fleet of 102 competitors in the Red, White and Blue Opti Fleets, and in addition, 25 Green Fleet competitors. Camp Seagull housed all competitors and their families, provided 3 meals a day with snacks and a campfire to prepare s’mores.

Practice race on Friday provided light air and a chance to adjust to a river tide and current. The first part of the day on Saturday showed typical fair winds for the competitors; later in the day, the winds picked up. Seems this group of one design competitors respond well to the Black Flag being used in place of the “Poppa” flag. Many were disqualified, but soon learned exactly what the Black Flag results were.

On Sunday, the competitors endured two to three foot swells and gusty wind in the shallow Neuse River. With two races on Sunday, the competitors raced a total of six races with one throw out.
