Hollywood grooving on Yacht Rock vibe

Published on July 17th, 2022

During the 2022 U.S. Snipe Nationals, the racing was matched by different bands that played on four of the five nights. The Class did, after all, trademark the motto ‘Serious Sailing, Serious Fun’.

It was on the awards night when the dance floor filled to the sounds of Band Overboard which delivered the timeless grooves of yacht rock, a music genre rooted in the Southern California boating lifestyle.

With Yacht Rock channels available on music streaming services, the tunes may soon make it to the big screen as news filters out of Hollywood regarding a new project.

Plans have been unveiled for the yacht rock musical comedy Sailing in which the jukebox musical comedy would follow the trials and tribulations of a group of 1970s musicians discovering the smooth sounds and lifestyle from yacht rock.

But what has been buzzing about this project is how three-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson is in talks for the leading role. The 60-year-old actor has come a long way from his early days as the bartender in the television show Cheers or the hoopster in White Men Can’t Jump, and his star status could get this project to sail.

“Everything about the yacht rock vibe, ethos, and lifestyle will be brought on board this fun and hilarious nostalgic comedy,” said Lionsgate president of production Erin Westerman. “…we’re confident that it will not only have a phenomenal soundtrack, but it will also put you in a summertime mood.”

Christopher Cross had it right when he sang, “Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me. And soon I will be free.”
