Happy birthday, MarineTraffic!

Published on November 3rd, 2022

We are avid fans of the MarineTraffic app, partly because it is free but also as Scuttlebutt HQ is alongside an active shipping port and it cures our curiosity with the comings and goings of ship traffic. Here’s a note from Demitris Memos, MarineTraffic CEO:

Fifteen years ago MarineTraffic started off as a cool project, an interactive map that would show ships’ location online. To do that, it would use the Automatic Identification System and Google Maps, both of which were new back in 2007.

Fast forward to today, MarineTraffic has grown into so much more. Recognized as the global leader in ship tracking and maritime analytics. A team of 200 passionate people, building responsible technology with real impact. The go-to platform that serves millions of people worldwide; those that make the world go round.

As we’re celebrating this milestone and reflecting on our journey, we know that we owe who we have become to the amazing community that fuels MarineTraffic; all our station operators, customers, data curators, and photographers; all of you that motivate us to keep building better tech for the industry. Thank you for your continuous support!

While we honor the past, we are looking into the future and it is clear that we are just getting started! We are more committed than ever to an efficient, green and connected shipping ecosystem. We have so much more to do together.
