Tight finish at J/22 Midwinter Champs

Published on March 19th, 2023

Twenty teams competed at the 2023 J/22 Midwinter Championship on March 17-19 in Fort Walton Beach, FL. With four points separating the top five, Travis Odenbach’s Honeybadger claimed the title with crew Geoff Becker and Justin Damore.

After completing three races on the first day, the fleet stayed ashore on day two due to strong winds but were able to finish three more races on the final day in winds at 15-20 knots and chilly temperatures.

“We are a light team, so it is a little scary,” noted Odenbach. “And this is a very shifty venue with frontal systems. There were 30-degree shifts. You can go from winning a race to 10th in about 30 seconds. Having 20 boats was great, and the North Americans will be at another windy venue in Kingston this summer.”
