Thinking about the big picture

Published on March 12th, 2013

From Peter Schwarz:
I couldn’t agree more with your comments about one-design racing (in Scuttlebutt 3793), reprinted from Bacardi Race Week. However, after 20 years of racing S2 7.9’s, I have seen a number of incidents where your comments on “class equipment and rules being equal” have been pushed beyond reasonable interpretation, and/or largely ignored.

Matters of lifeline sag, weight placement, foil fairing, etc. continue to plague most one-design classes and are perhaps as inevitable and ingrained as cheating in NASCAR. Nevertheless, each of these incidents causes further erosion of class camaraderie and can eventually destroy class racing enthusiasm unless strong definition, vigilance, and enforcement is carried out by those entrusted with such matters.
