Farr 30 Worlds underway

Newport, RI (July 17, 2013) – With temperatures approaching 100 degrees fahrenheit (38∘C) at the water’s edge, competitors will have more than just a star-studded fleet to contend with if they hope to win the 2013 Farr 30 World Championship hosted by Sail Newport.

Back-to-back World Championship Deneen Demourkas (Groovederci) returns with her core team including tactician Cameron Appleton and mainsail trimmer Darren Jones, but she says that, despite her double victory in 2011 and 2012, she’s no favorite for this championship. “We haven’t sailed the boat in a year while the rest of the fleet has gotten smoother and faster,” said Demourkas. When asked what it would take for her to claim three World Championships in a row – something never done before in the history of the Farr 30 Class, Demourkas grinned: “A miracle”, she said.

In more than a decade of Farr 30 racing, Jim Richardson and his Barking Mad team have finished on the podium 6 times, yet the Newport and NY-based skipper has never won the elusive title. Yet extensive practice and comfort in his home waters has Richardson in the unlikely role of favorite for the championship. “I love sailing in Newport, though looking around at the experience amongst the fleet, I don’t think that home court advantage will play a big role,” said Richardson. Former America’s Cup skipper and multiple World Champion Tactician Terry Hutchinson says it won’t be easy despite the team’s strong win last week during the North American Championship. “With talented teams coming up from Annapolis like Ramrod and Rhumb Punch, the always-tough Germans aboard Topas, and newcomers like the 2009 Melges 32 World Champs on Bliksem coming into the fleet, this could be the most competitive Farr 30 Worlds in a long time,” said Hutchinson.
