AC34: Challenger status report

Published on July 25th, 2013

(July 25, 2013) – The Round Robin segment of the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger series doesn’t conclude until August 1, but America’s Cup challenger Emirates Team New Zealand already has enough points (1 point for a win) to secure the top rank in this segment. As of today, here are the Round Robin standings.

Emirates Team New Zealand – 7 pts (3 races remaining)
Luna Rossa Challenge – 4 pts (2 races remaining)
Artemis Racing – 0 pts (3 races remaining)

As the winner of the Round Robin segment, the rules provide the Kiwi team with the option to go direct to the Challenger Finals (Aug 17-30) or elect to advance to the Semi-Finals (Aug 6-15) and choose their opponent in the Semi-Finals.

If the Kiwi team elects to compete in the Semi-Finals, the remaining team goes direct to the Finals, and will wait to compete against the winner of the Semi-Finals.

The Kiwi team has not indicated which option they will select; they will confirm their choice after their race against Luna Rossa on Sunday (July 28).

It is not yet known when the Artemis Racing team will enter the competition. They sailed their newly launched boat for only the second time today, and hope to be ready for racing by August 6. As there are only three challengers, the Swedish team is guaranteed to advance beyond the Round Robin segment.

August 6-15: Challenger Semi-Finals; best of 7 races
August 17-30: Challenger Finals; best of 13 races
September 7-23: America’s Cup Match; best of 17 races
