Isabella Bertold – October Sailor of the Month

Published on November 4th, 2013

Despite many boats getting hauled out at the local yacht clubs across the country, many dedicated sailors continue their on-water battles both in Canada and afar in the month of October. Here’s the report from Sail Canada

Royal Hamilton Yacht Club kicked off the month with a bang, capturing the Shark World Championship title in Robel/Muritz, Germany. Using a borrowed boat provided by the host club, the skipper Kevin Piper, crew Tom Nelson, and Jordan Clark secured the win after 9 races and a tie breaker against Austria.

In Montreal, members of the Queen’s University Sailing Team captured the CICSA National Team Racing Championship for the third year in a row, right on the heels of their CICSA National Fleet Racing & Match racing Championship victories held in New York (NYYC). These dominating performances predicate Queens University as the leading force in Canadian Intercollegiate sailing.

The NYYC also played host to the Laser and Radial Masters North Americans this month where Canadian Andy Roy picked up 4th overall, and Nigel Heath placed 5th overall on the Radial side of the course.

Team Henri Lloyd, led by Canadian Skipper Eric Holden, is enjoying success at the top of the leaderboard this month with a 3 point lead over Great Britain after 3 legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Leg 4 begins on Monday November 4th.

Canadian Sailing Team member Isabella Bertold travelled overseas early in the month to compete at the 2013 Radial Women’s World Championships in Rizhao, China. Bertold sailed quite consistently and posted a personal best result of 7th, beating out the 2012 Olympic medallists and ranking an impressive 5th in the world according to ISAF standings. This accomplishment earns Isabella Bertold the recognition of Sail Canada ‘Sailor of the Month’ for the third time this year! Congratulations to Isabella!

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Sail Canada encourages the submission of noteworthy Canadian sailing activities to sailorofthemonth@sailing.ca.
