Published on November 18th, 2013
It has been a busy fall for the US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider, the U.S. national sailing team. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls have been hard at work at a wide variety of events, including World Championships, domestic training camps, and a full-team retreat. Here are some recent highlights:
* Paige Railey (Laser Radial) added yet another World Championship medal to her trophy case, finishing in Bronze position in Rizhao, China, in early October. Full report: http://bit.ly/1gkRKTx
* American 470 class athletes gathered in southern Massachusetts in mid-October for a training camp focused on boatspeed. With development efforts overseen by US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider Technical Director Grant “Fuzz” Spanhake, much progress was made towards increasing readiness for the upcoming 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup season. * The full US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider participated in an intensive training camp at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. With instructional sessions focusing on high-performance sailing topics, campaign management, technical development, sports psychology, nutrition, and fitness, athletes in both Olympic and Paralympic classes were each challenged to take their campaigns to the next level. During their stay in Colorado, the team enjoyed full access to the impressive resources of the United States Olympic Committee, and benefited from interactions with athletes and coaches from other sports, many of whom will soon compete in Sochi, Russia. * The National Team Tour, sponsored by Chubb Personal Insurance, had its first-ever events in San Francisco in early November. The Tour was launched on November 7th at St. Francis Yacht Club (a US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider Gold Medal Partner Club) and followed on November 8th at San Francisco Yacht Club. The events brought Olympic sailing fans closer to the experiences of campaigning athletes. Seeking to educate and inspire the next generation of Olympians, the National Team Tour will travel to locations throughout the United States in the lead up to Rio 2016.
