Swinging the race course pendulum

Published on March 25th, 2014

A growing discussion in the sport of sailing is how alternatives are needed to the template Windward-Leeward regatta format. When each regatta becomes the same, and when the W-L course configuration benefits the best teams, a pecking order pushes away the less committed competitor.

While no event should get so crazy wherein the best teams can’t rise to the top, any trend that gives hope to all entry-fee paying people, and can instill some fun at the same time, is a trend worth tracking.

In their 27th anniversary, the NOOD Regattas are breaking their mold. While the NOODs are known to be a One Design regatta serving classic buoy courses, the 2014 San Diego NOOD in March presented a new feature – the North Rally Race – a one day, random leg, PHRF-scored race that weaved through the obstacles of San Diego Bay.

And it’s happening again in Seattle.

The North Rally Race on May 17 is making its debut as part of the 2014 Seattle NOOD on May 16-18. Perfect for boats that don’t fit within the One Design concept, and for people that have only one free day or are curious about the challenges provided by a 10+ nm course in the open waters of Puget Sound and its approaches.

Another event returning to its roots is the 42nd edition of the Yachting Cup in San Diego. Back when IOR ruled the day, this premiere regatta included a short offshore race in addition to the buoy races. The 2014 edition on May 2-4 will feature a random leg course through the Bay on Friday, and windward/leeward courses on the ocean on Saturday and Sunday.

Where else is the race course pendulum swinging?

BONUS: Scuttlebutt is such a fan of the Seattle NOOD North Rally Race that the first five people to contact us will have their $55 entry fee paid for them. Be sure to enter by May 9 as the $25 late fee is not part of this offer. Entry includes the Saturday party and two drink tickets.
