Taking steps toward the Etchells World Championship

With over 90 entrants signed up for the 2014 Etchells World Championship, teams are starting to narrow their focus for the competition on June 24-28 in Newport, RI.

For the teams already at the venue, the Ida Lewis Yacht Club Spring Regatta (May 17-18) hosted 19 teams for the 5 race series. Topping the fleet was 2010 North American champ and Worlds entrant Bruce Golison and his team of Richard Clarke, Dina Corsi, and Bill Lynn. Results.

On the opposite coast, at the site of the 2011 Worlds, San Diego Yacht Club hosted the Orca Bowl (May 17-18) for 20 teams. While winner Bruce Nelson won’t be heading east next month, runner-up Tom Carruthers and his crew Andrew Campbell and Chris Busch will be vying for the World title. In fourth was reining World Champion Marvin Beckmann who will seek to defend his title. Results.

It is expected for the bulk of the Worlds fleet to be in Newport for the Pre-Worlds at Ida Lewis Yacht Club (June 6-8) and the 160th Annual Regatta hosted by New York Yacht Club (June 14-15). Click here for the 2014 Etchells Worlds event website.
