32’ Marstrom sets new Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record

Published on June 11th, 2014

Newport, RI (June 11, 2014) – A new outright record and time to beat was set today for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record. Jonny Goldsberry of Newport, Rhode Island helmed Michael Dominguez’s 32-foot Marstrom, Bronco, around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 38 seconds besting the previous record of 01:07:59 by 5 minutes and 21 seconds. The record setting crew included Tom Loughborogouh, Jono Loughborough, Jonny Goldsberry, Tripp Burd and Emma Creighton. They chose to sail the course around the island to starboard, sailing south from the start off Fort Adams at 14:15:17 ET, on a southwesterly breeze ranging from 10 to 18 knots on an incoming tide.

Last year Bronco broke the overall record on October 10th, 2013 with a time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 17 seconds, only to be beat out by another Marstrom 32, Ultimate Pressure, on October 24th.

Helmsman Jonny Goldsberry said, “Today, was really puffy and a little bit calmer on the backside [of Jamestown], plus this was the first time this crew sailed together, so we felt like we could have done it even faster. We didn’t start a watch so we weren’t even sure what time we had when we finished. We’ll definitely be back to attempt it again before the summer is out.”

Skipper, Tom Loughborough said, “First we want to thank Michael Dominguez for letting us play with his toy. He’s in Los Angeles today, so we called him up when we saw the weather and he gave us the go ahead. We also want to thank Sail Newport for supporting the class and allowing us to be based here. With Sail Newport in mind, on this special day, a big thanks goes to Edgar Cato, we dedicate this one to you.”

Sailors have until October 31st to attempt to break the new outright record and also secure one of the other divisional records: monohull and all sailing craft under 32 feet. If by October 31st, no other team in any division bests Bronco’s outright record time, Bronco will secure the outright record for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record.

The Around Jamestown Record, presented by Mount Gay Rum in association with Café Zelda and IYAC is a perpetual all out record for sailing around Conanicut Island (also known as Jamestown) in lower Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.

Similar to other outright speed records, contenders will decide when to make a record attempt and also the direction in which they will sail around Jamestown. This means contenders can choose the most advantageous weather conditions and tidal flow in which to attempt the record.

Three categories of sailing boats will be recognized to vie for divisional honors with the overall perpetual trophy going to the boat with the outright fastest time. The entry fee is $100.00 per attempt for any vessel 32’ and over, vessels under 32’ the fee is $50. A portion of each entry fee will support Sail Newport.

The divisions recognized are:
• Outright Monohull keel boat
• Outright Mulithull boat
• All other sailing craft under 32 feet

The 2014 record is open from Memorial Day, May 26th until Halloween, October 31st during the hours of daylight. The yacht that wins the 2014 or outright record will be awarded Mount Gay Rum equal to the Skipper’s weight at the season ending awards party held at IYAC in Newport, RI.
