Jim Barnash wins Stolze Cup

Published on June 15th, 2014

Ten teams competed at the Great Lakes International Match Race Stolze Cup, hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (NY) on June 12-15, with Jim Barnash winning the event.

The conditions of WNW shifty breezes built to 15 knots by mid afternoon on Saturday, and Barnash came out on top of the first round robin on Saturday, tied with Magnus Sandberg with one loss each. Light NE winds prevailed on Sunday, but allowed a complete round for top 6 and bottom 4 was completed. Combining the totals from both rounds, Barnash beat Sandberg by one point.

This 4 day event was preceded by a 2-day Advanced North U Match Race clinic run by Dave Perry. Three youth teams came into the clinic with little Match Race experience and were able, with the coaching of Dave, put together some very close competitive racing with youth team of Sertl, in his first event, beating the winning skipper in both matches they sailed.

The winner of this event qualifies for the Richardson Trophy to be held in Rochester on October 3-5. Current teams qualified include CMRC founder Don Wilson.
