Thinking outside of Start-W-L-W-Finish

Published on August 26th, 2014

There has been a lot of discussion about the format of racing and regattas and the opportunity to race outside of the typical windward- leeward buoy racing formats. A good example of a fun, popular race is the annual Long Point Race Week, an invitational regatta that starts in Newport Beach, CA, races offshore to Long Point, Catalina Island. Participants spend the night in Catalina, sail in a race off the coast of Catalina, and race back to Newport the next day, making a three day regatta with plenty of festivities in between. Thirty-nine boats participated this year; this video shows the spirit of the non-traditional regatta format.
