Cayard wins battle of the Masters at Stars
Published on December 14th, 2014
Twenty-three Star teams competed in the Commodores Cup, the second stop on the four event Star Winter Series Presented by EFG International. Hosted by Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club on Dec. 13-14, Paul Cayard and Brian Terhaar won both the overall and the Masters division.
Saturday offered great sailing on Biscayne Bay with 10-12 knots consistent winds. The leaders Paul Cayard and Brian Terhaar, Larry Whipple and Brian Fatih and Miami local Augie Diaz and Arni Baltins finished the first day at the top of the fleet.
On Sunday, light and shifty winds prevailed, starting at 4 knots increasing to 7 by the end of the day. But despite the conditions, it was age and experience over youth that prevailed.
Attendance at the Commodores Cup went from 14 to 23 boats, a 64% increase in fleet size year over year. Not only are there more competitors but also more young sailors participating, with two apprentice teams – Tomas Hornos / Josh Revkin and Ben Sternberg / Will Christenson finishing in the top ten.
