Governor’s Cup: Australia and USA Lead Semi-Finals

Published on July 24th, 2015

Corona del Mar, CA (July 24, 2015) – The top eight teams at the 49th Annual Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship today completed the Quarter-Final round robin stage with two teams each from Australia and USA advancing.

With two Quarter-Final flights remaining, there was a remote chance for Royal Southern Yacht Club to disrupt the top four team that would advance to the Semi-Final Knock-Out stage. However, skipper Lachy Gilmour and his Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club team from Australia quickly squashed that scenario when they erased a penalty at the finish to defeat the English team in their first match of the day.

Gilmour, as the top seed team, selected Del Rey Yacht Club (USA) as their Semi-Final opponent, and sits up 2-1 in the best of five match. Home team Balboa Yacht Club, which finished third in 2014, is up 2-1 in their match with Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

Tomorrow will complete the Semi-Final stage and advance the top four to the Final and Petit-Final matches.

Background: Six international teams from Australia, England, New Caledonia, and New Zealand are facing six USA teams from California and Illinois, squaring off in the purpose built Governor’s Cup 21’s, designed by BYC Staff Commodore Alan Andrews of Andrews Yachts.
