Sail Canada Sailor of the Month – Tom Ramshaw

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the March report…

The Laser Midwinters West was held at the ABYC in Long Beach, California. Max Gallant (RVicYC) sailed to a 2nd place finish in the Laser standard fleet while CST sailor Isabella Bertold (RVYC) finished 3rd place and top female overall in the Radial fleet.

The Bacardi Miami Sailing Week is a regular stop on the circuit for many experienced sailors including Canadian Star sailors Brian Cramer and Cam Lymburner placing 5th in the Grand Master division.

The Finn European Championship was held in Barcelona, attracting over 90 Finn sailors including the latest addition to the Canadian Finn team – Tom Ramshaw.

Second to the Finn Gold Cup, the Finn European attracts the highest quality fleets with multiple Olympic medalists and World Champions in the mix. For Ramshaw, this was a very big step, having only transitioned from the Laser to the Finn in the summer of 2015, with his only previous international event at the Sailing World Cup Miami, finishing top Canadian in 13th overall.

But Ramshaw was quick to turn heads at the Europeans with a few steady top ten results amongst the hyper competitive fleet. Having spent very limited amount of time in the boat, Tom went on to sail in the Medal Race and finish a very impressive 10th overall.

“I am very happy with my result, qualifying for my first medal race at a major event,” says Ramshaw. “I will continue to strive for more improvements in the coming months.”

Ramshaw has previously been honoured by Sail Canada with the Nathan Cowan Memorial Award, awarded to the best developing sailor of the year in addition to the Marvin McDill award, also known as the Rookie of the Year award.

Ramshaw will continue his campaign to represent Canada in Rio at the upcoming Finn Gold Cup in May. Sail Canada is pleased to honour Tom Ramshaw with March Sailor of the Month.
