Terry Flynn wins Annapolis NOOD Overall Title

Published on May 1st, 2016

Annapolis, MD (May 1, 2016) – Despite steady showers, strong winds made for favorable sailing conditions today as the 2016 Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta, the largest national sailboat racing circuit in the United States, came to a close after three days of competition.

During the three-day event, nearly 200 boats and 1,000 sailors raced in 13 classes in a battle against rain, wind and fierce competition from around the world, ranging from amateur to world champion.

The J/22 USA 1501 team, skippered by Terry Flynn of League City, Texas, ultimately defeated the elements and dominated the competition, winning first place in the J/22 fleet and the regatta’s overall title. The victory earns Flynn and crew a trip to the British Virgin Islands to compete in the Helly Hansen NOOD Championship Regatta, hosted by Sunsail on Oct. 22-29.

The J/22 class was the second largest in the regatta, with 25 boats competing on the racecourse. Flynn and crew bested some of the strongest J/22 sailors in the country, including many top performers from past class events.

“It was challenging, both the weather and the wind, but I had a great time,” Flynn said. “The crew gelled, we worked hard, we didn’t give up.”

Of the 12 other classes, the majority were won by Maryland-based teams, with several Annapolis residents in first place positions. These fleet leaders include the J/24 Spaceman Spiff, owned by Pete Kassal; the J/109 Rush, owned by Bill Sweetser; J/70 Trouble, owned by Peter McChesney; and the Farr 30 Gotcha, owned by Bill Tower and Nate Kauffman.

The first-ever Helly Hansen Junior Crew, comprised of four local teenagers, competed against 18 other teams in the J/105 class, coming out in 11th place overall, with one 7th place race finish on their scorecard.
