College Nationals coming to San Diego

Starting May 24, the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) kicks off its Spring National Championship events with over 45 college teams competing in San Diego Bay off the B Street and Broadway Piers in downtown San Diego.
The National Championships are held in six categories, with Women’s Singlehanded, Men’s Singlehanded, and Match Racing in the fall semester while the spring season completes the school year with the Women’s Dinghy, Team Racing, and Coed Dinghy.
The university that compiles the best overall record in all six categories is awarded the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy, which was claimed in 2015 by the College of Charleston. The Cougars will be back to defend their title, with local San Diego Yacht Club sailor Jake Reynolds on the team.
“Over the past four years of college sailing, our CofC sailing team has had many great successes that I am more than grateful to have been a part of. I attribute many of my team’s successes to my background in the SDYC junior sailing program.”
For top ranked Georgetown University, the nationals will be a homecoming for Nevin Snow, 2015 College Sailor of the Year, and teammate AJ Reiter, both products of the SDYC program.
“Hosting College Nationals in San Diego will be a lot of fun since so many of the sailors are originally from Southern California,” explains Danielle Richards, the ICSA Secretary. “Personally, I’ve been involved since 2005 and I am very excited to host the 80th event in the same location as the first west coast collegiate regatta.”
The nationals conclude June 3, followed by the Afterguard Championship for college alumni on Saturday, June 4.
