MudRatz Fishers Island Sound Race

Published on August 16th, 2016

Stonington, CT (August 16, 2016) – A youth sailing race that started last year with a handful of eager young skippers is on course to become a can’t-miss event for serious sailors age 12-18 across New England.

In its second year, the Secor Volvo Fishers Island Sound 420 Race has attracted 50 youth sailing teams that will race beyond the dizzying buoys of the normal club 420 scene.

The race, which sets sail August 17, is the brainchild of Brandon Flack, Regatta Chairman and founder of the Stonington MudRatz youth sailing club in Stonington, Connecticut.

“Last year the kids really put on a show. It’s great to see one hundred 15-year-old kids ripping it up around the sound,” Flack said. “Sailing is such a clean and pure sport, and the natural beauty of Fisher Island Sound magnifies a race course that is simply stunning. These kids are going to have a day that many of us could only dream of.”

Inspired by the Volvo Ocean Race Newport and sponsored by a local premium local car dealer, the Secor Volvo Fishers Island Sound Race features a picturesque racetrack around Fishers Island Sound. The ten-mile course covers three states (RI, CT & NY) with the “stopovers” at the historic yacht clubs of the sound.

“Our boats might be smaller, our course defiantly shorter, but it’s a sailboat race and we want to win just as bad!” said 13-year-old race entrant Caelen Desmond.

This year’s race builds on the successful launch of the first edition in 2015, and it’s highlights include:
• Pre-race kickoff party sponsored by Dime Bank with grilling and DJ’s to celebrate in style!
• Live coverage of the sailor’s parade, start, stopovers, and finish live on Facebook
• Live GPS race tracking by RaceQs.
• Overall perpetual trophy for first place skipper and crew presented by Zim Sailing.
• 2016 Team Trophy – The team with the three boat lowest combined point total wins.
• On Board Reporter competition with a GoPro grand prize for the best coverage from inside a 420.
The race partners with Sailors for the Sea to educate young racers about the importance of implementing the Clean Regattas program to make sustainable choices and ensure this regatta protects the ocean,
.
The first 50 teams ages 12 to 18 to register are invited to join the fun here, for what is sure to be a classic event.
