Club 420 NA’s Kicks Off

Published on August 18th, 2016

San Pedro, CA (August 18, 2016) – The 2016 Club 420 Association North Americans began today hosted by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in conjunction with the Club 420 Class Association. The races are being held in the open waters of the Pacific Ocean in front of the yacht club. There are 35 boats competing in the regatta.

The morning began with cloudy weather and temperatures around the mid 70s. The winds were from the west-northwest at around 5 knots. As racing got underway the skies cleared and the winds built to about 12 knots. Temperatures got up to the high 70s. It was a beautiful day for racing.

The first warning for racing today was at 12 p.m. and racing started soon after. The competitors sailed on trapezoid courses and completed three races by the late afternoon.

The racing was very tight today with the top boats all very close. This is the last event in the Club 420 Association Triple Crown series, so some of the competitors are not only vying for the North Americans title, but also the Triple Crown title, which is scored based on the three best regattas out of five qualifying events over the course of the summer.

Racing will continue tomorrow, with four races planned. The sailors will be racing through Sunday, August 21. The first warning is set for 12 p.m. each day and no race can start after 3 p.m. on Sunday. The awards ceremony is set for Sunday after racing where the top five finishers will be given prizes as well as the top three Women’s and Junior boats.
