Racing Remains Close at Club 420 NA’s

Published on August 20th, 2016

San Pedro, CA (August 20, 2016) – The 2016 Club 420 Association North Americans continued today hosted by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club with the Club 420 Class Association. Thirty-five boats are competing in the regatta held on the open waters of the Pacific Ocean near the yacht club.

Racing got started just after 12 p.m. under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 70s. The winds from the West at about 10-12 knots and were marginal trapping conditions. The winds built all day to a steady 15 knots with puffs in the high teens and as the winds increased so did the waves.

The competitors sailed on trapezoid courses and completed three races today making the regatta total 10 races. The racing remained close again among the fleet despite the challenging conditions. Eduardo Mintzias and Declan McGranahan are still holding onto their lead fourteen points ahead of Jack Johansson and Claudia Loaicono in second. A few other competitors moved up and down on the scoreboard today and the scores remain close throughout the fleet.

“Very content with today, we love the breeze,” says Sally Wilmont and Max Brennan, who are sitting in thirteenth place. “It was really important to minimize maneuvers as the breeze built and have big lanes to put our bow down in. We focused on keeping the boat going fast.”

Tomorrow will be the last day of racing with no race beginning after 3 p.m. Two races are scheduled for tomorrow. A trophy ceremony will be held after racing to hand out awards to the top five competitors overall, the top three women’s teams and the top three junior teams.
