Club 420 Midwinter Championship 2017

Published on February 20th, 2017

The Club 420 Midwinter Championship attracted a 103 boat fleet on February 18-20 in Jensen Beach, FL. With winds varying from shifty light conditions to full trapeze planning, the regatta format had two days of a qualifying round, followed by the fleet being divided on the final day into gold and silver divisions.

Jack Johansson and Jack DeNatale from “Team Chill” showed off some commanding speed at times, leading the regatta through the qualifying round with all top two scores. On the second day of racing, Jack and Jack swept the day with all firsts.

Not to be out done, Tucker Weed and Olivia de Olazarra stayed tight with the Jacks by scoring no lower than a third to set up a show down with Jack and Jack on the last day as they trailed by just 4 points. Ivan Shestopalov and Claudia Loiacono stood in third after the qualifying round at 10 points back of Tucker and Olivia and in a tight battle with local hero’s Emily and Katie Bornarth from the USSC Martin County.

On the final day, Tucker and Olivia showed their mental toughness to overcome the deficit and win the 2017 Midwinter championship. The local ladies Katie and Emily Bornarth also battled to finish 3rd overall behind the Jacks.
