Inaugural Star Vintage Gold Cup Regatta

Published on September 30th, 2017

Richland, MI (September 30, 2017) – The theme for the inaugural Star Vintage Gold Cup Regatta was “Honoring the Past – Leading the Future” through the celebration of the original Wooden Star Boats, with this premise permeating the atmosphere throughout the event.

After five races during the previous two days, today got started with 9 more holes of golf to be followed by two more races. While the conditions were fine on the greens, the wind never really filled in except for a couple of sucker breezes, so the plug was pulled about 1430 and the boats put away.

Twelve vintage boats competed, all of them wooden and more than 50 years old and expertly restored. The event and the boats are the creation of Don Parfet and Jon VanderMolen. Ten years ago, VanderMolen created the P-Star. The P-Star was a fast design, and built with the highest technology and processes allowed in the class. At the 2012 Olympics, 15 of the 16 competitors used VanderMolen’s P-Star. About 25 were built. There is a long history of Stars on Gull Lake and in both the Parfet and VanderMolen families.

Honoring the victors was the Robert M. Boudeman Trophy which is a fully rigged model of a Star in an impressive glass and wooden case that has been handed down through the family for 60 years. The names of Paul Cayard and Brian Fatih, who sailed Gem IX, the ‘64 Olympic winning boat of Sir Durward Knowles, will be engraved on the base and hopefully many more names will be added in the future.

The inaugural event on Gull Lake was held September 28 to 30.
