Racing Resumes at Flying Scot Midwinters
Published on March 28th, 2018
Sarasota, FL (March 28, 2018) – No racing yesterday for the 61 teams at the 2018 Flying Scot Midwinter Championship, but today more than made up for that.
The wild wind at the dock had the competitors thinking that they were in for a tough day on the water, but shortly afterwards they knew it was going to be a great day, as the wind laid down a bit and the competitors headed for the racecourse.
The 6-12 knot winds, mostly in the 10-12 range, shifted from Southeast to Southwest between Race 1 and 2 but stayed Southwest for Race 3. During the races the shifts were minimum and the racers could pick a side and stick with it. Following the shifts was essential to a successful day.
The competitors had two 4-leg windwards-leeward races and one 5-leg windward-leeward, finishing in the direction of the club in the 3rd race, just the way the racers like it. After today’s racing, the 3-way tie for 1st in the Championship Division went away, and the Challenger Division leaders changed as well.
Atop the Championship fleet is Zeke Horowitz and team, followed by David Ames, Jeff Linton, Mark Swanson, and Ryan Malmgren. Challenger division leader is Bill Vogler followed Randy Rubinstein, Gregory Kampf, Forest Atkins, and Shaun Clements.
After racing, the sailors were treated to a chalk talk with Zeke Horowitz and the leaders.
Racing continues to March 29.
