Roster for USA Youth Worlds 2018 Team

Published on May 9th, 2018

US Sailing has named fourteen athletes to compete at the 48th edition of the Youth Sailing World Championships to be held July 16-20 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

As the premier event in international youth sailing, the 2018 Youth Worlds is expected to include competitors from over 70 nations. The event, open to sailors under age 19, is set to be held in U.S. waters for the first time since 1996 in Newport, Rhode Island.

“Racing for the highest prize in international youth sailing on home waters will be a great honor, and an experience that our sailors will carry with them for the rest of their sailing careers,” said Malcolm Page, two-time Olympic Champion and Chief of U.S. Olympic Sailing.

The United States will send an experienced and formidable group to Corpus Christi Yacht Club, with half of the team having prior Youth Worlds experience. Three American athletes will return to defend world titles won at Sanya 2017 (China), with Charlotte Rose (Houston, Texas) in the Laser Radial and sisters Carmen and Emma Cowles (Larchmont, N.Y.) in the I420.

To help prepare the sailors for the big event, US Sailing’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) has partnered with top regional racing programs and the American TP52 professional sailing team Quantum Racing to provide dedicated training camps, coaching and general support.

World-class coaches involved in prepping the team include Olympic medalists Anna Tunnicliffe, Charlie McKee, and Morgan Reeser, as well as America’s Cup veteran Grant “Fuzz” Spanhake, 2017 US Sailing National Coach of the Year Rosie Chapman (Houston, Texas), 2017 US Sailing Development Coach of the Year Steve Keen (Stamford, Conn.), and Phil Muller (Miami, Fla.).

“The ODP training camps that we have set up for this spring and fall will continue the successful model that has been used to help prepare recent U.S. Youth Worlds Teams,” said Leandro Spina, US Sailing’s Olympic Development Director. “We will have multiple camps that focus on specific classes and skills, and once again we are bringing in a world-class group of coaches supplied for the sailors by US Sailing and by Quantum Racing.”
