Top High Schools seek Singlehanded title

Published on October 30th, 2019

The top 36 singlehanded high school sailors from across the USA will compete in the 2019 Cressy High School Singlehanded Championship on November 2-3 in Santa Barbara, California, in conjunction with the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA).

The participants will compete in two fleets of 18 Laser Standard Full Rigs and Laser Radials. Each sailor has earned a spot by qualifying at championship regattas in one of seven ISSA districts, and will vie for the titles on the Pacific Ocean venue.

Three sailors are returning in the Full rig division from last year’s Championship to vie for the Standard Laser title including Thad Lettsome (Tabor Academy) who finished 5th overall last year, Caleb Yoslov (Redwood HS) who finished 7th and James Golden (St Mary’s HS) who finished 14th.

Nicholas Sessions (Redwood HS), Marcus Huttunen (Pt Loma HS), and Jack Baldwin (St Ignatius College Prep) competed in the Radial division in 2018 and have now moved up to the Full Rig.

In the Radial division, nine returning competitors will make for stiff competition. Chapman Petersen (The Hotchkiss School) who finished 2nd overall in 2018, and currently stands 5th in the ILCA-NA rankings, returns to challenge for the title. Additionally, Nicholas Reeser (St Thomas Aquinas), Diego Escobar (Pt Loma HS), Spencer Barnes (St. Ignatius HS), Mateo Di Blasi (Antilles School), Leyton Borcherding (Brunswick School), and Michael Burns (St Stanislaus College) return after finishing in the top 11 last year.

Not to be overlooked, Matthew Wallace (Rye HS) is currently ranked 2nd overall in the ILCA-NA Radial rankings as well as well as Javier Garcon (Ransom Everglades) in 38th.
