Demise of “The Laser Class”?

Published on October 29th, 2020

During the 2020 World Sailing Annual Conference, an effort was made to clean up some of the noise surrounding the International Laser Class Association (ILCA).

Ever since longtime Laser builder LaserPerformance was found to be building boats that were non-compliant with the ILCA rules, rather than make them compliant, the company has been supporting a newly launched class called The Laser Class (TLC) that was intended to exist separately from ILCA.

The idea for TLC was for it to become a World Sailing approved class, which would allow LP’s Lasers to be legal for one design competition. However, at the current World Sailing meeting, the Equipment Committee voted to reject the TLC application for International status, and also intends to propose a change to the regulations so that such applications are not considered in the future.
