Oakcliff Triple Crown Series 2021

Published on September 26th, 2021

The Oakcliff Triple Crown Series got underway with the first of two stages in which over $35,000 of prize grants is awarded to each class at each stage. Stage one saw eight teams in the 49er duke it out in a grueling 18-25 knot breeze on September 25-26 in Oyster Bay, NY.

After five races, it was brother duo Duncan and Christopher Williford (Fort Lauderdale, FL) who came out on top. In second place were Jonathan Kelly and Dylan Jones (Victoria, BC) and in third were Scott Rasmussen (Fort Meyers, FL) and Charlie Hibben (Cape Cod, MA).

“The Oakcliff Triple Crown Series is an absolutely essential stop in our North American training circuit,” Jones commented. “Thanks to the prize grants we will be able to get the new, upgraded mast and sails that have been released for the 49er so we can stay at the top of our game.”

One of the primary goals of the Triple Crown, besides offering a unique opportunity to gain financial support as a direct result of good performance on the race course, is to raise the level of Olympic sailing in North America so that campaigners don’t have to make costly trips to Europe to find good competition.

“The great thing about the American 49er squad right now is there is a group mentality to work together to get better as a whole,” said Christopher Williford. “Being able to train at home in the US is just so nice. The Triple Crown also focuses us with regattas bookending a week of quality training at Oakcliff’s full service facilities.
