Dodge wins Triple Crown of Charity

Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB), The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Hospice organizations awarded the 2021 Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy sponsored by Weems & Plath to John Dodge, skipper of #998ForaCure.

In 2018, the Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy was created to promote greater skipper participation in charity races and to enhance fundraising support for the respective charities. The jointly promoted charity sailing races, respectively known as The Leukemia Cup, The CRAB Cup, and The Hospice Cup, were held in June, August, and September in 2021.

The skipper with the best finish in all three races who also raises the most money for each of the three charities is presented with the stunning, repurposed trophy formerly the Power Squadron of Baltimore’s Navigation Trophy.

The competition this year was very intense with the top two finishers within one point of each other after three individually scored events. The winner for 2021 is John Dodge, skipper of #998ForaCure, a name he used to campaign two donated boats.

Runner-up was John Heintz, skipper of Endurance, a Harbor 20. John won the trophy in the inaugural year of 2018 and has finished in the top two every year. Together, the two finalists raised over $44,000 for the charities.

The trophy presentation was November 12 at The Market House in Annapolis, MD. The permanent trophy presented to the winners were a Weems & Plath bell mounted on a plaque and a desk clock. “This is a most appropriate trophy because when you finish your cancer treatment in a hospital you ring a bell when leaving,” said Dodge. “I have rung this bell before and this will have special meaning for me now.”
