Sailing onboard for 2024 Olympics

Published on February 3rd, 2022

Due to the one year postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, there are moving pieces moving fast. Half of the ten Sailing events for Paris 2024 are new, either due to format or equipment. The addition of the Mixed Two Person Dinghy event has changed teams, while the existing Mixed Multihull should have more women sliding back to the helm.

New campaigners have also jumped on the conveyor belt, and it will all get thrown to the wall soon to see what sticks. With low international attendance at the US Open Sailing Series events in Florida this winter, the first key test of 2022 is the Trofeo Princesa Sofía to be held April 1-9 in Mallorca, Spain.

Not that it was a concern for Sailing, but the confirmation of the initial Sports Program for the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Games has been confirmed, and Sailing is among the 28 sports, continuing its run as one of the few original sports from the 1896 Games.

While the Sailing Program at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 were the same, requirements from the International Olympic Committee for gender balance, mixed events, and inclusive equipment required all Olympic sports to assess their program for Paris 2024. Here’s the plan for Sailing:

Men’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 7
Women’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 6
Mixed Two Person Dinghy – 470
Men’s Skiff – 49er
Women’s Skiff – 49erFx
Men’s Kiteboard – Formula Kite Class
Women’s Kiteboard – Formula Kite Class
Men’s Windsurfing – iQFoil
Women’s Windsurfing – iQFoil
Mixed Multihull – Nacra 17

Odds are good that this will also be the plan for Los Angeles 2028… here are the 28 sports included in the Initial Sports Program listed by their International Federations:

• World Athletics
