Options for club boats

Published on May 4th, 2022

Dear Curmudgeon: Our yacht club has 30+ year old J/22s as club boats and they are very long in the tooth. What are four or five great options for club boats? – Asking For A Friend

Dear Friend: The best boat for your club will depend on budget, availability, sailing conditions, and anticipated use. The J/22 is an excellent choice as it checks a lot of those boxes, as might a J/24, Sonar, or Soling. The Harbor 20 is quite popular too, and likely the simplest to sail. The newish RS21 has gotten traction as a club boat, though it may be too much to handle for novices and/or wet and windy venues. When narrowing your choice, also consider maintenance cost and availability of parts. – The Curmudgeon
