Take a kid big boat sailing

Published on June 15th, 2022

When youth sailing programs focus solely on age-based dinghies, the protégés may fail to ever connect with the type of sailing that exists beyond their youth years. Early exposure improves the odds that the next generation remains in the sport, with Martine R. Zurinskas offering this template from her neck of the woods:

Lake Lanier Sailing Club summer camp is always fun, but the highlight is the Wednesday Night PHRF racing. Located north of Atlanta, Lake Lanier has about 55+ boats on the line every week, but during camp some of those boats are filled with smiles, cheers, and occassionally squirt guns!

Thanks to all the BIG boats for making room and giving our youth a new sailing experience. Those rides turn into crew and future boat owners – we got several examples to prove it. Don’t discount the power of a ‘big boat ride’ for a summer camper… it can spark a lifetime of love for sailing beyond the small trainer!

Get your fleet to support it and I promise the rewards will be endless. Skippers, we can’t give you a point deduction for your support, we know who you are, and we thank you! Try it… big boats are FUN!
