Game time at RS Aero World Champs

Published on June 26th, 2022

The 4th RS Aero World Championship has attracted 54 entrants representing eight nations, with racing on June 26-July 1 in Cascade Locks, Oregon.

A 12-race series is planned on the mythical waters of The Gorge which offers a unique sailing venue with a wind-tunnel between the mountains that rise from the water’s edge to nearly one mile vertically high in places.

The afternoon thermal breeze pipes up against the Columbia River’s current to provide some fantastic long downwind rides through awesome scenery while the upwind current offers a conveyor belt back to the windward mark. So far in training the Gorge has ‘done its thing’ with strong westerlies pumping up the river gorge against the current from dawn to dusk.

“Seattle sailors love going down to the Gorge in the summer for the most fun and gentle big-breeze-sailing around and the relaxed fun times on the beach,” said Regatta Chair John Renehan. “It’s a special occasion when we get to welcome sailors from around the world to this stretch of river as well as share some of our favorite shore side diversions.”

The large RS Aero fleet just up the Pacific coast at Seattle bolsters the strong host USA contingent. International visitors include sailors from Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain, Ireland, Switzerland, and Uruguay.
