Deep field for US Team Racing Champs

Published on November 3rd, 2022

A record number of teams are entered for the 2022 U.S. Team Racing Championship on November 4-6, hosted by Coastal Virginia Youth Sailing Foundation and Norfolk Yacht & Country Club in Norfolk, VA.

“Building off of the Swiss League format run by Bristol Yacht Club last year, we are increasing the number of teams to 30 and using 36 CFJs to create a fast-paced, exciting weekend of sailing on the Lafayette River,” said Event Chair Sam Patterson.

Among the teams competing for the George R. Hinman Trophy is an unprecedented number of women competing as 48% of competitors are female, with more female drivers and all-female teams than in the past.

“It is an incredibly deep fleet in terms of talent,” added Patterson. “Team racing is one of the best disciplines in our sport for bringing people together, and a fantastic platform for retaining people in our sport after college sailing.”

First held in 1981, this year’s Championship features an impressive list of accomplished teams and experienced team racers, many of whom have competed in or won this Championship in years past.

Winners of the 2021 event, Team Holiday Sideshow, are back and looking to win their third Hinman title. The 2022 team has Greiner Hobbs/ Katie Lounsbury, Ian Barrows/ Marlena Fauer, and David Thompson/ Chris Klevan.

Also in attendance are the 2022 College Women’s Team Race National Champions, competing under the team name Dawguettes. The team from Yale University is Carmen Cowles/ Ximena Escobar, Mia Nicolosi/ Anisha Arcot, and Emma Cowles/ Helena Ware.
