Superstitions: Qalupalik and Rainbow

Published on December 29th, 2022

Never Say P*G – The Book of Sailors’ Superstitions is the nautical reference book you never knew you needed. Compiled by R. Bruce MacDonald, he goes through the alphabet detailing on what provides good and bad luck at sea. Here’s a sampling from Q and R:

Qalupalik
The Qalupalik is a creature of Inuit legend described as human-like but with green skin, long hair, and very long fingernails. She lives in the sea and hums to entice children to come closer to the water where she will drag them in.

Rainbow
Pointing at a rainbow brings bad luck or, at the very least, rain. To draw attention to it, you must describe its location.
