Boating on the Seine at Paris 2024

Published on April 25th, 2023

Sailing has a long Olympic history as one of the original sports from the Games of the first Olympiad (1896) held in Athens, Greece. But suitable waters often require the Sailing venue to be relocated, which for Paris 2024 is over 400 miles to the south in Marseille.

However, boating will remain a central feature in the French capital as the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony will be on the Seine River, with between 140 and 170 boats expected to be used to carry the 10,500 athletes along the six-kilometre stretch.

This plan makes Paris 2024 as the first Olympic Games Opening Ceremony held outside a stadium, and that has agencies responsible for security on edge. Remember when opponents of the Mixed Two Person Keelboat Offshore competition were worried about security? To protect all the athletes, it is estimated that 25,000 security agents will be required, and 35,000 police officers are expected to be mobilized.

That’s a lot of heat to help build, as the Olympic Movement states, “a peaceful and better world.”
