Riots at Olympic sailing venue
Published on July 2nd, 2023
While it is during the Olympic Games when the host city enjoys the spotlight on an international stage, it is the build-up toward the quadrennial competition when the locals leverage the media attention.
Police violence and racism has been a recurring theme in France, and following a fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy of Moroccan decent, nationwide protests erupted after the incident with police during a traffic stop in Paris.
Among the hotspots is Marseille which is set to host sailing events at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Mayor Benoît Payan has requested for additional troops in the city after buildings and vehicles were torched and shops looted.
The United Nations urged France to address its “deep issues of racism and discrimination in law enforcement” since the killing. French President Emmanuel Macron has denied systemic racism in French law enforcement agencies. – Full report
