Stranded America’s Cup yacht refloated

Published on July 18th, 2023

After an IACC America’s Cup yacht was found stranded north of Auckland on July 17, the owner has confirmed it was refloated later that day.

NZL20, the vessel used by Team New Zealand when they competed in the 1992 America’s Cup, was found stranded at Tindalls Bay, in the North Auckland suburb of Whangaparāoa. Owner Mike Parker said the vessel was refloated by himself and a few friends.

“[The yacht] is made of carbon fibre, which is five times stronger than steel. So even when [the yacht] was sitting on the ledge…all it got was a scratch,” he said, adding that the public need not worry about environmental concerns, because of the limited damage to the vessel. – Full report
